I Miss Rich

If you went to church in the nineties then you’ve no doubt sung at least one Rich Mullins song. If you were really lucky you went to one of his concerts. I got to see him twice. Once with Greg and Rebeca Sparks along with an entire church youth group, Beaker and assorted musician friend’s of his and the second time with just Beaker. Both times were one of the best concert experiences of my life.

Tonight I found an entire show on YouTube. It comes close to capturing what it was like to be there, to see him live.  To make it even better the set list is really good.  Almost all my favorite songs are included.  If you decide to watch them all be warned, part nine is missing and a lot of the cuts take place in the middle of songs.  You can buy the DVD here.

Here’s part one.

Dreams

I normally don’t remember my dreams. In fact there are only a few that I can look back on that I’ve ever remembered beyond a few seconds after I woke up. Both of these were very vivid and were still quite clear when I woke.

The first took place in what was meant to be the site in San Angelo. I was giving a building tour to two people from the Oak Ridge site. We checked in at Security and my badge from when I was working in Texas was in the pile, though in the dream it was just a piece of laminated paper with my name on it. The building, as I said, was only meant to be San Angelo but looked more like the sites in West Virginia – we were looking for two of the staff members from Texas though. We got on the elevator and it started to take us up to the sixth floor. After a few seconds the elevator jolted to a stop and the floor indicator read “tilt.” Then the elevator car began to turn towards the doors and went into a free fall.

The second took place on Edgemore road between Solway and Bull Run, just past the boat launch. I was in a boat, alone at first then with someone from work. A police officer came by and asked if we have a fishing permit. We told him we weren’t fishing but he insisted we needed the license. As we got out the boat tipped. My co-worker righted the boat while I went to get a fishing permit. When I got to my car there was a deer carcass, mutilated from being hit by a car, on the roof of my car. Across the street Cindy, a girl from work, had stopped to laugh at me before she went to get the paperwork the policeman needed, leaving me to take care of the deer situation on my own.

Like I said, I don’t normally remember my dreams. These two are in my head though. I was actually scared about coming to work today and we don’t even have elevators.

Kentucky

I love Kentucky almost as much as I love Tennessee. I used to take periodic trips up to Lexington to see my friends Mel and Lance but hadn’t been in a while. They got married a few months ago and I made the journey north to attend.

While there I got to visit with some people I’d gone to college with; Chris, Stormie and Adrian. I got to see Stevie and Tilly and of course Mel and Lance. A good time was had by all.

I’ve kicked the idea of moving to Kentucky around over the past year. Things at work are going really well for me but my personal life really sucks. I could transfer to Kentucky without too much trouble and probably get a promotion in the process. At the same time though, I’m scared to death to step out into the unknown, the Bluegrass State.

Here are some pics from the trip to KY.

Two Babies

Two of my sisters had babies in the last forty-eight hours.  Each had girls; one weighing 9 pounds 2 ounces the other was 9 pounds 11 ounces.  These will bring my collection of nieces and nephews to nine. If I can get permission from my sisters I’ll post photos.  Rest assured though, we’ve now got a grand total of 90 fingers and 90 toes, though J hasn’t given me a current count on her son’s digits.

Bad Taste? Yes please.

A man calls a suicide hotline and discovers that it’s been outsourced to Pakistan.  The man says “I’m thinking of killing myself.”  The man on the other end of the phone says “Do you know how to fly an airplane?”

Knoxville Radio…we’re doing okay

Back in the very early days of the blog I posted a bit about a local radio station, WDVX, that plays alt-country, bluegrass and americana.  While I was tickled pink to have an awesome indy radio station right here in Knoxville, I missed rock music.

I recently discovered WFIV, an independent rock station broadcasting out of Farragut.  They play great alternative rock from the eighties, nineties and the current stuff.  They stream so you can check them out no matter where you live.  I recommend listening late on Fridays where Todd plays really mellow “ambient” music.

It’s not listener supported like WDVX and NPR, but quite honestly I’d rather listen to commercials than have programming interrupted for a week while the hosts beg for cash.

Stuff you don’t need

In an effort to keep up with new posts and do my part to help in the war effort, I’m launching a new series. I’m going to feature some really cool stuff that you don’t need but should buy anyway; you know, to help the economy. Enjoy!

  • Clean up the carnage from your WOW games. (Carnage = Potato Chip Crumbs)
  • Let the hands do the washing
  • Something for the rich hippies
