Arab News, the Arab world?s largest English language paper has an article outlining a deal being proposed by Hamas that actually recognizes Israel.? Palestinian activists sitting in Israeli jails, some of which are Hamas members themselves, put the compromise together and high-ranking Palestinian officials are praising it, though stopping short of officially endorsing it.
Here?s a run down.? We?ll start with what Hamas is willing to give.
First of all Hamas will officially recognize Israel?s right to exist as a nation.? They?ll also stop all attacks on citizens in Israel.? That?s it.
In exchange they want is a Palestinian State on the lands seized in the 1967 war, names the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.? It calls for a complete Israeli withdraw from these lands and declares it open season on Jews in the West Bank and the return of a million Palestinians to what is now Israel.? This is basically the plan that Fatah has long been proposing.
Now some Hamas members are speaking highly of the plan, others are not so optimistic.? The Hamas political leader is still calling for the fight of a United Palestine, and instead of recognizing Israel he?s suggesting an outright ?Jihad? against the nation.
So two proposals could make the news this week.? First the middle management plan that calls for at least a reduction in hostilities though they do demand a lot more than they give or the Executive level plan that offers an increase in hostilities.? With the general history of Palestine and deals I?d say neither offers a lot of hope.
