America is a pretty safe place but there is still danger around every corner. The National Safety Council spells out the danger in raw numbers. Here’s how our fellow citizens met their makers in 2002.
- Four people die in streetcar related accidents, making this a rather remote 1 in 71 million chance while taking the bus increases those odds to 1 in 6.7 million.
- More people die on falls that occur without any change in floor level (4,200) than on stairs (1600). Either way, moving around at all gives you a 1 in 105,000 chace of pushing up daisys.
- 636 people drowned in their swimming pools while 352 managed to do it with only their bathtubs.
- People managed to blow themselves up with fire works (5), pressurized tanks (27) and the vague ‘other’ (137)
