I have been refusing to stop for Wal-Mart Gestapo for years. On a trip back from Florida once I was even followed into the parking lot by a particularly militant “greeter”. This guy has the right idea.

You’re absolutely right to stand up to them. Well done. And great article! It is a problem…
Even in mostly civil England, the greed of big business overtakes sense. I haven’t been in Wal-Mart at all for years (though living 3000 miles from one makes that easier to achieve!–but I can honestly say I’ve never been in their European version, Asda). Here I avoid shopping at Tesco as much as I can. But a couple of years ago I wrote this up after a visit in there:
…Well that wasn’t the end of it. We had some lunch, two toddlers kicking their high chairs, etc, and then as we tried to manoeuvre the trolley out the door, the security alarm went off. A very kind security guard approached us and worked through our trolley til he found the security device left on a pair of boy’s trousers. He then asked to see our receipt so he could make a note of the assistant who’d failed to take the tag off. I told him no. I said that I’d already seen how badly they treat their staff, and that I wasn’t going to be part of their witch hunts. He kept saying ‘process, system, blah blah blah,’ and I stood my ground! The stuff was mine. He couldn’t make me go through my bags for my receipt. I gave him every reason so he wouldn’t have an argument to believe: I told him it was in the bottom of my bag, that I’d lost it, that the baby was sick on it, that in the end he just wasn’t having it because he wasn’t going to go give her any more grief. He didn’t like it, but I didn’t either, and I wasn’t going to budge. I wanted to go back to the girl and tell her to get out while she can - she doesn’t have to put up with that. There are plenty of other shops to work in.
Long live the locally-owned shop!!!
